A little swimsuit, contemplating masculinity.
Celebrating the beauty of Brazilian men.
Juliano Corbetta’s work inhabits a pretty singular place straddling Brazilian culture and American fashion. He’s known for his gifted eye for male beauty.
Butch Swimwear was one of Juliano’s early projects, a swimwear brand. I am extraordinarily proud to have designed it for him.
I gave Butch’s identity system three core characteristics: diagonal lines of type speeding across the langorous bodies Juliano photographed, a joking usage of collegiate typography, and warm, tropical color.
Butch was the venture that cemented Juliano’s place in Brazilian media as the preemeninet eye for male beauty. he used its sales revenue to move into other ventures, such as Made in Brazil, which I also designed for him, and later, Samba Zine, which championed the beauty of queer Brazil.
Each of Butch’s collections had a gallery website, and a lookbook for retail outlets.
